The Board of Directors introduces Leena Aalto

15.09.2025

LEENA AALTO, Chairman of the Board, founding member

1. Why did you join Second Hand Tampere ry and/or the board?

- Anne Korkala and I decided to set up Second Hand Tampere, because someone had to do it. There was no such body to bring together circular economy operators and make them visible, we needed one and we had a huge drive to do it together. When we found other people around us who were just as determined and had a heart for the cause, there was no stopping us.

2. What is your own relationship or background to second hand or circular economy (you can tell us about your work, work experience, or future dreams in this field)?

- My own relationship with second hand is self-evident, but also a bit controversial. On the one hand, I've seen from an early age how people try to repair and reuse things, and on the other, how you can't keep everything yourself. In life, you have to find a balance between the material and the immaterial, the necessary and the unnecessary.

The passion for old quality goods, the ability to find them and the awareness of the limited resources of the planet led the Vintage Garden (@vintagegardentampere) in 2009. I am still on that path and now, as President of SHT, I am proudly watching the industry grow and evolve, and we, the creators, are and will have to grow with it.

3. Feel free to tell us something about yourself, e.g. a current or past hobby, a dream, a secret habit or even describe your character.

- I am a creative and dynamic learner and actor. I want to do and move forward. I prefer to paint with a slightly larger brush but I also appreciate fine details. Feeling and atmosphere are important to me. The most important are those close to me. In the water, in the gardens, in the evening sun sitting on the stairs and under my arm is where I like to be. The well-being of others is also important to me.

Let's get to know each other and work together for a more sustainable future! 🤎
